BioCalcium: Key points

  • One egg yields some 2.5-3.0g of elemental calcium (Ca). Egg shell calcium (ESC) is a natural biological blend of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and trace amounts of other minerals. There are 27 elements in total, i.e. magnesium, boron, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, sulfur, silicon, zinc, etc... The composition of an eggshell is very similar to that of our bones and teeth.
  • ESC is easy to digest and absorb. Together with vitamin D3 – present in egg yolk, it also helps counteract osteoporosis (loss of bone mineral density) with no significant increases in blood calcium levels. Exercise is an essential factor to build strong bones and protect bones from becoming thin and weak. We must all try to aim for as much physical exercise during our day as we possibly can unless we don’t care our bodies to slowly rust. Numerous studies have shown that weight bearing exercises and resistance training can help.
  • From a dietary perspective, calcium and magnesium need to be taken in at least equal amounts, ie 1g/d, and some people require more supplementing magnesium (ie, magnesium citrate, banana) than calcium depending upon how much calcium they obtain from foods. Muscle cramps are first signs of excess intakes of calcium vs magnesium. From that perspective, it is suggested that most people should take at least 400mg of calcium per day to supplement next to their food sources, which equates to about half a teaspoon of eggshell sourced calcium or xxx ESH tablets. Do not exceed 500mg of calcium supplement at any one time since your body is unable to process that much calcium at once. If you require more than 500mg of calcium be sure to split it up throughout the day to make sure as much as a possible is being absorbed.
  • A few good food sources of trace minerals are maca, spirulina, chlorella, kelp, dulse, and medicinal mushrooms. At the very least take a multivitamin along with some added magnesium and get out in the sun for at least 15 minutes a day if light skinned, or 30 minutes a day if dark skinned. This will make sure that you get adequate levels of vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin.
